Okay, this may seem like an obvious answer, but wouldn’t the school tell you what you need, just like what books you would need? (The school may also give you both “required” items and “recommended” items.)

Your Professor will tell you what software and/or other materials you’ll need for the course that he/she will teach. Also for programming and other computer courses, you’ll have computer labs that will have all the software that you’ll need to complete the labs and projects.
