What are the first steps to learn computer programming?

Unbreakable asked:

I would like to work with artificial intelligence later in my life. I'll start computer science next year at a university and I would like to learn some basics during these months that I have. What should I learn? I'm 20 years old and I've been around computers since I was a kid and I'm more than just an average user, however my programming knowledge is none. What PL should I start with?

Thoughts on giving Aircraft A.I?

Just read this article, and found it interesting. Is giving Artificial intelligence to Aircraft a good or bad idea? I can see the good in the application, but now all of a sudden Sci-Fi movies like Terminator are not so far fetched. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/oukoe_uk_helicopter_robot I'm not talking about auto pilot. The article started that the computer learned just by watching the other copter.

I am looking for a Christmas present for my husband. He works in the field of artificial intelligence. I have seen several robotics kits, but I am unsure which is best for someone who is older (26) and has a lot of programming experience, but not much experience with robotics hardware.

Richie Paine asked:

Is it possible, likely, and what are some links to the best AI work online? All I really know about is http://www.20q.net and that's not really Artificial Intelligence exactly. I'm talking about something that can ask an answer question during a conversation in a relevant way.

So I have taken an introductory course in comp. sci. and intend to eventually get a degree in computer science. But I have time off now; what can I do to get ahead? (Books, exercises, projects etc.? If so, what in particular?) I wonder if my programming practices are clumsy or understanding too limited to textbook instruction. Also, for the future, I'm especially interested artificial intelligence or maybe scientific applications.
